Why a Digital File Checklist Matters
At Mustard Press, we created this Digital File Checklist to help ensure your print projects are production-ready and meet our quality standards. By following this checklist, you’ll get your files ready for press efficiently and avoid delays in the printing process.
Your Pre-Upload Digital File Checklist
1. Use the Right Design Programs
It’s best practice to use vector programs like Adobe Illustrator to create logos and illustrations. Meanwhile, use pixel programs like Adobe Photoshop for images. Finally, use page layout programs like Adobe InDesign to set up your job, design the text, and bring everything together.
2. Match Document and Final Size
Your document should be the same as the finished size (i.e. letterhead at 8.5” x 11” or business card at 2” x 3.5”). In other words, make sure your design matches the final trim size.
3. Set Proper Bleeds
Extend bleeds .125” over the document size. This way, you’ll avoid unwanted white borders after trimming.
4. Include Linked Images
Include all linked images by using the “collect for output” feature included in your application. Additionally, double-check that links are not missing or broken.
5. Convert RGB to CMYK
Moreover, convert all RGB images to CMYK before exporting (or grayscale), preferably in a .tiff format. As a result, you’ll get accurate color reproduction during printing.
6. Check Image Resolution
Images should have no less than a 250 dpi resolution placed at 100% (i.e. 300 dpi resolution placed at 200% equals 150 dpi resolution). Therefore, always verify resolution before exporting your final files.
7. Include All Fonts
In addition, including all fonts helps prevent substitution issues (PostScript and TrueType). This ensures that no fonts are substituted or lost during output.
8. When Making PDFs
Set job options to “no compression.”
Embed all fonts and add .125” bleed.
No RGB images.
Minimum 250 dpi resolution.
In short, follow these settings to produce a reliable, print-ready PDF.
9. Organize Your Files Before Uploading
Create a folder that contains the job, all images and fonts, and a PDF for proofing. Name the folder with the project title used in your job order form. That way, your submission stays organized and easy to process.
Before uploading your design, be sure to review our Printing Guidelines and Artwork Setup Guide to ensure everything meets our standards. For extra guidance, check Adobe’s official guide on preparing files for print.
Final Tips for a Smooth Print Process
Always double-check file resolution and color mode before submitting. A quick review using this Digital File Checklist saves time and prevents reprints. In the end, taking a few extra minutes can make a big difference in print quality.
